Entry #4: Gotta' Catch 'Em All!
Pokémon, released in Japan on February 27th, 1997, is largely considered the highest-grossing media franchise of all time. With 39 main series games, the newest of which was just released on October 16th, 2025. Pokémon Legends: Z-A brings fans back to the past. This new game is a sequel to the 28th and 29th games of the series - Pokémon X and Y. Taking place in the Kalos(kah-lowes) region, one of nine regions that each generation of Pokémon belongs to, Z-A offers new additions to the already fantastic lore behind this region. I recently purchased this new game on the day of its release. So far, I’ve put in about 15 hours into this game alone. For today’s blog, I am going to be discussing... Pokémon! Since the new game has just been released, I will also be providing my personal opinion on it.
What is Pokémon? Well, I'm glad you asked. Pokémon is a video game with origins set back to 1996 on the Game Boy. Created by Satoshi Tajiri, the founder of Game Freak (a video game developer), to share his passion for video games with other people. The first game released by this Japanese game developer was known as Quinty, or Mendal Palace for Americans. This game sold 128,000 copies worldwide and officially established Game Freak as a game developer. This allowed them to pursue the other projects they are most known for: Pokémon.
Inspired by Tajiri's childhood hobby of bug catching, Pokémon is a catching/battling-focused game where humans live in harmony with these mysterious creatures called Pokémon. Humans can become Pokémon trainers by catching these creatures inside Poké Balls. These creatures are then able to level up in battles against other Pokémon and their trainers. The concept was easy to understand, the game mechanics were simple; anyone could play it. This game ended up being a HIT. The craze for this game was so frantic that people began to dub it "poke-mania." The popularity of the video games eventually led to the making of a Pokémon TCG, as well as an anime series with over 1,300 episodes.
There are 39 main Pokémon games, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the newest addition to the franchise, and the entire purpose of my writing this post! This Pokémon game was released for both the Nintendo Switch and the Switch 2 and features upcoming DLCs to purchase more content within the game. Within the first week of release, it has sold 6.5 million copies.
I bought Legends: Z-A on the first day it released, October 16th, and have already put over 17 hours into it. My opinion on the game? It really isn't as bad as people say it is! If you're a Pokémon fan, you are going to enjoy this game. Although it features new battle mechanics, as well as an unfamiliar free roam map system, it still feels like the Pokémon games everyone knows and loves.
This is obviously just my personal opinion as a long-term fan of the franchise; there is no right or wrong answer to what unique battle factor is the best. Speaking of "the best," I want you to leave a comment down below (if you bothered to read this far) and tell me what YOUR favorite Pokémon game and creature are! My game is Pokémon X, and my favorite Pokémon is probably either Phantump or Mimikyu. I want to thank you for reading my post, and to remind you to check back for more Phoenix Times with Jordyn H.
